our last day in korea was bittersweet. i was looking forward to going home and relaxing a little before having to go back to work. though i love korea and of course my family (as noted in previous posts) maintaining the level of respect, etc that is required by cultural laws always prohibit me from feeling 100% at ease. i never want to offend family especially when they spent so much time showing us love.

note the large box i have in the picture on the right. my uncle bought us seaweed. LOTS of it. i thought i was going to have to declare or even get taxed on some of it. thankfully not. some friends in nyc got to share in the bounty and the bulk of it went to my mom to help dispense to other aunts.

before leaving, joseph took the time to take pictures of the more communal areas at my aunt’s home in Bundang (a suburb of seoul about 45 minutes via bus). there are two half baths. one with a toilet, and sink, another with a shower head and sink.

my aunt’s family live in a good area and are basically surrounded by a local park, so that means no more development in their specific neighborhood. one day joseph and i actually decided to walk up the park, but too bad we forgot to take pictures. maybe next time

After the trip to GyeongJu, we spent the night at my uncle’s home in Gumi.

It’s a small and modest house in what most of us would consider a very rural area. this is where my dad’s family’s land is. most of it belongs to this particular uncle, since he was the only son to stay in korea, while the other two sons went off to the states. he built this home from “scratch”. he and his wife saved their entire lives in preparation for retirement.

americans typically think of retirement as moving to florida, hanging out with other old people and going to denny’s for the senior grand slam special. koreans have a different view. my uncle and aunt spend their time farming the family land. the grow their own soybeans, and other vegetables. they do everything organically so everything is cooked simply and the flavor is amazing! they make their own soy sauce, tofu, soybean paste (dwenjang), red pepper paste (ggotchujang), and a number of other things.

On basically what was our last full day in korea, my uncle gave us a tour of his home. extremely proud of what he’s been able to provide for his family, and also to show us that he’s taken care of our family land. he pointed to some of the dried greens that were hanging from the garage and said that it was my dad’s favorite vegetable. so he dries plenty of it each year hoping my dad comes for a visit. he showed us the mill he uses to grind the beans.

before getting ready to take us to kimcheon, he wanted to show us one more thing. my dad’s best friend’s burial/memorial site and the buddhist temple the man had built and worshipped at. though my dad’s family is catholic, they were good friends with this man and also proud of his acheivements.

i don’t know his name, but my dad showed me pictures. he was the provincial wrestling champion. but also a devout buddhist. he would go to a local cave and meditate for days without food or water. later he became a famous buddhist monk and raised money to build this temple. along with the temple he had a deep desire to serve the disabled and mentally handicapped. there is an adjacent home to the temple. we didn’t get to visit the facility so no pictures. unfortunately, my dad’s friend was murdered by one of the mentally ill. he was buried next to the temple.

we then decided to take a quick trip to kimcheon. there’s a park there that features different types of art. including some very interesting statues like these:

the first is joseph pretending to play a children’s game where you attempt to hop on someone’s back and play a game of rock, paper, scissors. next joseph was told to rub the buddha’s belly so we would have good luck in trying to have a baby. i proceeded to touch the belly button instead. the last two were all in good fun of course

there should be no vacation/travel posts without the gluttonous amount food consumed! we went to a pork bbq place. instead of the usual vents that are fixed on the ceiling, you could pull these vents down towards the table and then push them back up and out of the way to eat. this basically concluded our trip to the kumi area. before we left my uncle proceeded to say “i’m sorry if they did anything wrong”. after this lengthy post of the hospitality and the family love they showed, suffice to say there was NOTHING wrong that they did. in fact, joseph and i probably should’ve said what they had said instead. we intruded on their quiet lives and they welcomed us with open arms.

my aunt and uncle put us on a high speed train back to seoul. this by itself is a treat. it’s like taking the acela instead of the regional train. time difference between the two is a few hours because there are also far fewer stops in between.

it actually dropped us off not too far from namdaemoon. so guess were we went next?

this outdoor street market is HUGE. it’s a maze. i tried to be as diligent as possible to make sure we either knew where we were going, or at least know how to get back to where we came from. it’s a sea of wholesalers of all different types of stuff, of everything from clothes, socks, bras, pots, knives, computers….you name it, they probably have it. apparently there are alot of tourist from china and japan looking for korean ginseng. all the sales people kept yelling at me and joseph in cantonese, mandarin, taiwanese, japanese and korean – unsure whether we were one or another.

lastly, the last nite of being in korea meant that we finally got to spend some time with my cousin. usually he’s the one i spend most of my time with when i’m in korea. but this trip was obviously different. he’s also far busier now, running the furniture company that my uncle built. it used to be living room, bedroom and dining room furniture company. my cousin decided to change the direction of the company based on his research and noticing the fair share of furniture companies in asia. it was a smart investment and business strategy for him. the new direction was to build wardrobes for apartments. much like in the US, the real estate market BOOMED all over asia, with new buildings and renovations happening all over. guess who was building new wardrobes through many of korea’s new/remodeled homes?

we ended up starting at a chicken place. like i said before, joseph was so smitten with kyochon, we looked for every opportunity to eat more of that kind of chicken. my cousin ended up taking us to this place where one of the owners looked like my aunt #6. we had some beer and chicken and caught up. instead of staying after we finished eating though, we headed off to a second place. some japanese place to eat more food and drink some more. by this time we get to this second place, i’m already a little tipsy, on the verge of drunk. i don’t think joseph was, though he did get quiet and looked very happy with a huge grin on his face. this is probably why there aren’t many pictures of our time spent with my cousin. man koreans can drink.

Joseph and I figured out around the annual Vision retreat that I might be pregnant. I’m fairly regular, but my period hadn’t come when it was supposed to. So once we got back home, we went to the pharmacy and got some tests. joseph shared about the experience here via some pictures. let me just tell you, trying to read and understand those lines was confusing!

Once I was sure, I started doing the research on hospitals and doctors. In NY, it’s a bit mind boggling. You’re basically choosing between the best Children’s hospital, best NICU, best pregnancy/birthing hospital, best high risk doctors, etc. It turned out, whatever hospital I chose would be either the best or at least ranked top 10 in the country in something or another.

Next was down-selecting the doctor. My criteria was:

1. Recommended by a friend or more
2. Takes my insurance
3. Delivers at one of the better hospitals, per my previous paragraph

I made appointments with about 4 doctors after getting a list of about 20+ doctors from various friends and doctors. Only a few actually fit my 3 criteria. But then I canceled the rest of my appointments after having seen the first doctor. She was great. Joseph and I didn’t feel the need to see a bunch of other doctors after her.

Beyond the research and administrative stuff, my body was freaking out on me. Lack of appetite basically caused me to lose about 10lbs. Weird. Most people gain weight, instead I lose weight. I didn’t want to eat anything really. Meat was a definite turn off and actually still is, but I forced myself to eat it for protiens sake. However, almost anything spicy would be eaten no problem, just not a whole lot of it.

Morning sickness was more like ALL-DAY sickness. At one point I had both diarrehea and vomit coming from my body at the same time! (sat on the toilet with a trashcan in front of me)

The good is that I’m definitely eating better. I eat far more vegetables and my want for korean food is stronger than ever (perhaps to joseph’s chagrin =P)

And the GREAT is how loving and supportive joseph has been through all the ugliness, grossness, and pickiness.

1. joseph and i were married on july 26, 2003. i was 23. the next day i turned 24. there were about 1000 people at the wedding, with 4 receptions. but no limos. just friends..lots of friends

2. i like cooking for friends and family. i took amateur classes at FCI to make sure i wouldn’t feed them crap. but i have no aspirations in becoming a professional chef.

3. i like stupid movies. joseph calls it the “theresa network”. i’ll watch 13 going on 30, notting hill, and love actually whenever it shows up on tv and i’ve got free time. but some stupid movies will make me gag – most recently “enchanted”. but i also have a love for smart movies.

4. i used to go karaoke alot back in college. i like to scream into the mic, so i usually sing korean rock ballads. my favorites are lee seung hwan, and kim kyung ho

5. at church, i like to sing at the same octave as the guys when singing worship songs. sometimes it scares the people around me.

6. i love to drive. i miss having a car. my first car was an electric blue nissan altima, after college i bought an acura tl. i now own no car, but part owner or many buses and subway cars.

7. i like to play golf, but i’m not very good anymore. i’m a better coach/caddie.  in middle/high school school i used to play alot and actually had a decent handicap.

8. i grew up in inner city baltimore. alot of the stuff that happens in the Wire seems familiar to me.

9. i dislike curry, but will make it for friends and will eat it.

10. i LOVE rice. my comfort foods are rice with kimchi and seaweed soup on the side. it’s actually the first meal i ever remember eating. i hope this will be an early food for our daughter too.

11. i like to do crafts. i like papercrafting and knitting. i’m currently in the middle of doing a papercraft of pee-wee herman for a coworker, and i’m trying to knit a baby blanket.

12.  i ran into a coffee table when i was a kid. i now have a scar immediately underneath my left eye. most people can’t see it because my glasses usually help hide it

13. i’ve lived in 11 different homes in maryland alone (does NOT include dorms). 2 in nyc. for a grandtotal of 13. (how fitting…)

14. i’ve had the same cell phone number since 1998.

15. i don’t like chocolate. i had a traumatic incident in elementary school where i had some chocolate milk and shortly thereafter threw up all over my and my friends lunches. i’ll eat white chocolate sometimes tho.

16. i have a large family. 26+ “cousins” just on my mothers side. 26+ “cousins” on my dad’s side as well. i haven’t met everyone yet, so i’ve stopped counting. the ones i’m closest with are those i grew up with, and helped take care of as i was growing up myself.

17. i’ve always dreamed of owning my own business. i’ve already thought through my business plan, financing and 5 years worth of goals with high level milestones every 6months. my parents have owned at least 8 businesses that I am aware of/can remember.  most of my aunts and uncles own(ed) their own businesses as well; ranging from a furniture company to a cafe.

18. i scare most people the first time i meet them. it’s usually me being friendly, they just don’t realize it.

19. i hate the heat. when i vacation, i like places that are usually cooler and no beaches please.

20. i’m skeptical about alot of things.

21. i don’t like people who have a problem with or complain about something but don’t have suggestions on how to fix it.

22. i can drink heavily, but choose not to. my tolerance is hereditary.

23. i like offal meats. hearts, gizzards, feet, tongue, ears, marrow, intenstine, tripe, sweetbreads, livers, etc. i don’t eat them often tho. they are not good for you in excess.

24. i’m strangely good at dealing with customer service and getting what i want either over the phone or in person

25. joseph is my favorite person in the world. right behind my halmuhnee =P

day9 of our korea trip was a trip to GyeongJu.  Joseph had read in the travel books about this place as the place to go to see Cherry Blossoms in korea. I briefly mentioned it to my uncle and next thing you know, that’s where we were headed.

Unfortunately, the day we decided to go it rained. Most of the days we were in Korea it didn’t rain. Just bad timing I guess but the views and the drive was still great. just look at some of the pictures above. plenty of trees to look at and just a beautiful place to be.

since most of korea was about food, for me at least, i must also share about the food we had there. for lunch my aunt had planned to take us to a very popular and good restaurant, but once we got there it was ridiculously packed. the way was far too long, and since we had planned to see a bunch of things that day we went to another place next door.

needless to say, they thought the food wasn’t that good. i didn’t really mind it. i think i’m too used to korean food that is just mediocre. My mediocre is the equivalent to bad in korea >_<.  i’ll skip on describing the mediocre food. not worth my time or effort

next up was a trip to one of the oldest buddhist shrines in korea. by now it was pouring. my uncle bought us each a plastic poncho and thankfully they had some umbrellas in their car. one of the nice things about doing touristy things while it’s raining is that there are so few tourists it almost doesn’t matter

Joseph was able to sneak this blurry picture in before we got into any trouble when told we weren’t allowed to take pictures of the shrine. you can sort of make out the gold buddha behind the pillar.

the rain made us all a little miserable. walking around the dirt paths, in the rain was not ideal. our pants were soaking, we were cold, and the risk of falling while walking up the hills and stuff was much greater than we would’ve liked. so we left shortly thereafter. maybe one day joseph and i will go back when the weather is more manageable.

like the korean fried chicken, these gyeongju-bbang pastries were a trendy food for a while. it’s basically a thin flour pastry filled with redbean paste. it’s a not too sweet, small dessert. i’m not a big fan of these types of desserts. mainly because i don’t really like my redbean to be on the drier side. still tasty tho. i think joseph had a few.

next up was a museum. it’s now been way too long for me to remember the name of the museum, but it’s the main one in gyeong ju. here we saw more statues, and old relics. it was also a nice break from the pouring rain.

the highlight of the day for me was dinner. look at this spread! all these little dishes took up the entire table. fish, meats, pickled veggies, stir fried this and that. plethora to choose from. a great meal to end the day.

here’s a nice little aside:

all of us in the states complaining about gas prices, can now stop. in korea this WAS the price of gas back in july (only a little into the rising gas crisis we’re going through now). it’s about $1.60 per LITER. that equates to about $4.50/gallon for the cheapest gas. i’m curious as to what the gas prices in korea are now. i’m imagining my aunt’s family in korea taking the bus or subway instead of their 2 huge audi sedans or the gas guzzling volvo. ok.. yeah..probably not likely.

hopefully my next korea post won’t take 2 months to write =P

joseph and i started planning the trip to the dmz before we left for korea. at first i was a little apprehensive. as a kid i vaguely remembered having gone, but it was nothing exciting and it was just peering through some coin binoculars. well it turns out what i vaguely remembered was true, but it would’ve been far more exciting if i had known i was “special”.

south koreans aren’t allowed on the dmz tours that go past the binocular viewing area. so no one in my family ever knew we were allowed past that “line.” when i mentioned it to my aunt in korea, she was a little baffled as well. but after a few calls to the USO, we were booked. (if you ever plan on doing this, make sure you book in advance because they were completely booked for 3 of the 4 days that were available while we were there)

we started with a very early morning cab ride into the city. they want you there around 7:30am! and since we were staying outside of seoul that would’ve been even earlier on a bus or in the subway. i got some breakfast of kimbap and we bought some drinks.

this tour is pretty big. it’s two full sized coach buses completely packed with people mainly from the US. it’s then a fairly uneventful hour drive to the DMZ. but once you get there, you get off the bus, only to be transferred to a different bus. this bus takes you to get briefed. some stories of altercations that have occurred between north korea and the us/south korean forces at the dmz.

they also shared some information about north korea and the tactics they try to use at the dmz for the foreigners. like this flag pole. s. koreans built the “smaller” one on the left, and shortly thereafter, the n. koreans built the monstrous one on the right. it’s really rather amusing, since the n. korean flag can’t fly when there is rain or sleet because it’ll rip under it’s own weight.

they also make you sign this scary waiver. the waiver basically says that if an altercation were to happen during the tour, the US and s.korea are not responsible for your safety. that combined with the lovely briefing of previous altercations, basically scares you into not making gestures or saying anything inappropriate durng the tour. oh yeah..lets not forget all the military personnel that can/cannot be seen throughout the tour.

the first picture above is the n.korean propaganda village. it’s basically shells of buildings in which no one lives. not really sure why the n. koreans think the rest of the world is too stupid to realize that it’s not a real village? they do it to “attract” people to n.korea, but i think it only the not-so-smart folks fall for that. while the rest of the world tries to attract the smartest folks from other countries.

the second picture is the location of one of the altercations we were briefed on. at this location, there was a tree between the far left and center trees that blocked the view. so s.korean and us troops attempted to cut down the tree. n.koreans came after the “loggers” with axes and promptly decapitated a few. there’s now a memorial plaque where the tree was.

joseph already shared a little bit about the “bridge of no return” so i won’t go into details, but it’s scary how crossing that one bridge meant you were n. korean or not.

hopefully this is the last time joseph’s hair will ever look like this. i don’t think it was necessary for him to form his hair this way, but i guess some people might think his faux-hawk could be misinterpreted as a big “f* you.”

throughout the time we were there, we were told often of when we couldn’t take pictures. which would’ve been fine if they told us when we could’ve taken pictures! so most of the time joseph and i looked at each other asking ourselves “what? we could’ve taken pictures just then?”

one place they were clear we could take pictures was behind this photo line, about 10 feet away from the binoculars. unless we had some professional cameras, there was no way to get some very clear pictures of n.korea. instead we opted to take pictures of the guards, the photo line, and a far away watch tower.

btw. if you’re a korean food connoisseur,  be wary of the lunch on this trip. joseph liked his bulgogi, but i really disliked my bibimbap. the banchan (appetizers) also stunk. it’s all edible. i’ll leave it at that.

during the tour they also take you down one of the tunnels the n. koreans built as entries into s. korea to try to attack. the tunnel is really long. amazingly long. like so long many people were huffing and puffing trying to avoid the low ceilings, and to get to the end, only to have to promptly turn around and avoid the low ceilings again. at the end of the tunnel tour, i was all sweaty and nasty, so i decided to cool myself down with a frozen treat. above is a gookhwabbang. it’s essentially vanilla ice cream, with red bean and a layer of mochi within a casing similar to an ice cream cone. joseph said he didn’t want one, but he ended up eating half of it. i should’ve bought two =P i looked for it at the hanareum here in nyc, but they only had the version without the mochi in the middle. still pretty tastey tho.

at the end of the tour, we were dropped off again at the USO at around 3pm. So with time to kill before having to go to home, we walked a block or two to the war museum. outside the museum is basically a large park that surrounds the museum. in the park there’s lots of huge statues and memorials remembering  troops from various countries and korea.

museums in korea are CHEAP. $3 cheap! and that’s without a discount. if you’re poor and want to go to korea, these huge museums is probably where you want to go. (yeah yeah alot of nyc museums are “free”, but they also try to guilt you into “donating a minimum of $5 for students and $10 for adults”, cheapest museums i’ve ever been to are the dc museums. the smithsonian foundation basically make sure most of the museums are absolutely free, without the guilt trip)

at the museum there’s large dioramas of what it was like during the war. from what you probably have already seen on the tv show – MASH – to refugees who had to leave their homes due to fighting. the middle picture is a korean artist’s depiction of a tear drop. it’s made of dog tags from  numerous soldiers and then wrapped in barbed wire from the dmz. the museum is a great crash course on the korean war. you can get as detailed as you like, or skim through the bulk of the exhibits.

i think i shared before about joseph’s obsession with korean fried chicken. we had seen this place before the dmz tour and decided if we had time, we’d go there for an early dinner. since this was the more popular chain, i was expecting greatness. throughout seoul we saw lots of storefronts saying “two two chicken opening soon” it was like seeing a starbucks around every other corner in nyc. so we ordered similar to what we ordered at kyochon. beer and coke, fried chicken in sauce and spicy garlic chicken.

i’m really not sure why this was a more popular chain than kyochon. the chicken wasn’t as good. instead of only the double boned wing peice, it was various parts of the chicken ranging from the breast meat to the drumstick. i still crave the korean fried chicken done right!

during the reprimand from the other day (re: day4 post) my cousin mentioned a tour bus that runs through seoul called “seoul city tour” they’ve got 4 different tours. palace, downtown, night and convention tours. we opted for the downtown tour since we thought that would be most interesting for us. the great part about this bus is that if you get a day pass, you can get on and off as you please at any of the stops your ticket is good for.

a completely no frills tour in a very simple bus. each seat is provided with headphones and a gadget that plays an audio tour of the various stops in various languages.  since joseph has never been to most of the spots, we went on the bus for the entire 2 hour roundtrip so he could hear more about each of the stops and then decide which one(s) we wanted to check out. he said he enjoyed it. i dunno. I didn’t get a headphone for myself, i somehow sat myself down at the only seat on the bus that didn’t have a headset. it was fine, for me it was more orienting myself of various places i used to hang out at and trying to remember what used to be where and when.

after the 2 hour roundtrip, we needed lunch. we’ve been trying to stick to korean food being that korean food in nyc is just so-so and in nyc every other cultural “food” can be found that’s almost if not just as good as the home country. joseph also wanted to check out one fast food chain for a quality check. but why KFC of all places? kfc was our non-chinese food choice in china. the chicken was great. joseph thinks it’s because the people who worked at the kfc took pride in what they do and chose select chicken to sell. this maybe true, but for me KFC in china was a nice (God-send) break from the chinese food (i’ve known since the china that i can’t handle eating chinese food for every meal for more than a few days without feeling sick and greasy). i know, i know. kfc is greasy too, but it’s a different kind of greasy. kfc korea wasn’t as good according to joseph. i couldn’t really tell. i’ve rarely eaten fast food in the last 4 or 5 years, especially after reading the book “fast food nation” so my fast food taste buds are happily long gone (in-n-out doesn’t count). but he’s probably right. you’ll know why in a later post.

at lunch we decided that we should go to the national museum. it was a great choice. the museum was cheap (~$3 for the both of us) and HUGE. it took us 2 hours to get through half of the first floor, and the museum has multiple floors. we didn’t get through the first floor after having been there for over 2 hours, it was time to go to meet up with family for dinner. (more on that later.) but the 2+ hours we were there was great. for another $3 you can rent these pda devices which will give you commentary on about 70% of the artifacts/museum peices. the stupid thing drove me nuts for the first 30 minutes because i’m not very patient. you have to walk up to a peice and then let the pda find the commentary in order for the it to play the specific commentary. i didn’t want to wait. i looked at everything but didn’t wait to listen, unless it picked it up almost immediately. (yes. sunggyuk ii geuphae)

we left the museum without seeing the whole thing. but for $3 who cares, 2-3 hours was more than our monies worth. plus family is more important, especially if you’re getting to meet some family members for the first time!

meet #1 (yoohyun/cris) and #2 (yoosun/kate) of korean triplet fame. famous in korea since triplets are rare and also because they were featured on tv shows that were played throughout the country. maybe i should’ve asked for their signatures =P jongwook, their dad, is my quiet gadget-loving cousin (blame him for my need of personal technology devices). the kids however, are definitely not quiet which we found out shortly after meeting them. at first they didn’t want to talk to us, scared to say hi since we weren’t so jovial when we first saw them and also scared since we were “foreign”. secondary to the meeting, was dinner of course. we had some amazingly good pork ribs – korean style, what else?

we ate till we were crazy full, and then tried to “trick” the girls into liking us by bribing them with some ice cream. it worked for about 2 minutes, and then they retreated to their parents and grandparents shortly after gobbling up the ice cream.

hmm..you might be asking, if they’re triplets, what happened to #3? yoomin/kelly spent the day with her other grandparents to help give her parents a break from the craziness of 3 kids at once. for those of you with kids, you know how difficult it is to have just 1 child, imagine having 3 all at the same time, all the same age, and demanding to be treated equally!

no pictures, but #1, #2 and their parents spent the nite at my aunts that nite, and my cousin and i had a few beers together while watching tv. at 7 yrs old, #1 loves beer too. she’s definitely family.

it doesn’t sound very exciting. why would this be such a fun place to go to on a vacation so far away? i dunno. probably memories from when i was a kid. and i like history. history was always a subject i didn’t have to study that hard for, it just seemed to come naturally. ironically, i have one of the worst memories in history.

there’s plenty to do. they have different performances throughout the day. starting with traditional dancing:

then of course we can’t forget the food. joseph had the kalgooksoo with some grilled pork on a stick. i had soojaebi. the food at the village is really good. usually tourist spot food stinks, but they do a great job of trying to be authentic.

thankfully we bank with an international bank and my aunt also uses the same bank we do. my aunt drives us to this building that looks sort of lame from the outside but when you get inside there’s a bunch of floors with random things including a bank. inside the bank we don’t just enter the regular common folk area, there’s a “vip” area for the high rollers/veterans. we go straight there and it seems like everyone knows my aunt. they exchange some money for us at a little bit better of rate than the avg person since it’s the “vip” area. not really sure how much better of a rate I got, but i was assured that it would be better than those common folk “over there”.

in this same unusual looking building were 2 hair salons right next to the bank on the same floor. weird. we were told that one salon is for the older folks, and the other was for the younger set. so we got our haircuts as we normally would on our post-easter vacation. joseph always gets some weird contraption on his head, and this time was no different, he got saran wrapped =P

we both got trims and some haircolor. i decided this time i didn’t want to do anything crazy and just stuck with a little bit of color, and joseph got a reddish brown color.

then we went to buy some groceries. knowing that joseph doesn’t like alot of korean foods, my aunt decided to wait to get groceries after we arrived. while at the costco like warehouse joseph saw these fun things (wendy, pay attn):

we also saw some other stuff too, like frosted flakes and fruitloops, which they called “corn frost” and “fruit ring” respectively. and i guess they try to promote milk by calling it “einstein milk”
the most beautiful thing in the market was the fresh seafood. it looked amazing! i feel like we rarely ever get to see fish that fresh in a market in nyc and so well laid out that it really makes you want to buy it

then to a late lunch of jjajjangmyun. the last two or three times i’ve come to korea, my aunt takes me to this place in another building, in the basement that has some great jjajjangmyun.

thus ended our day out. the rest of the day was spent at home with family and catching up on some much needed sleep!

technically day 1 was not in korea.. but rather getting to korea. it was still fun. i didn’t sleep at all during the first half of the 16hr flight. i slept a little at the tokyo airport during our 4 hour delay! i’ll get to that later tho. we got to JFK a bit early, mainly because i can’t calculate time, but i guess it’s better to be early than late and miss the plane altogether. since i didn’t sleep much i got to see way too many movies. starting with “PS I love you” a chickflick that was a bit weird and depressing. “waterhorse” was ok, sort of reminded me of the movie “free willy”. “atonement” for all it’s award nominations was a bit of a disappointment. i guess i was expecting more. “national treasure: book of secrets” was essentially more of the same as the first one, but not as exciting. alot of the characters were dull. i actually really enjoyed “august rush” maybe because i liked the music. the story was a little bit odd with the music drawing the parents and kid together, but eh, it still sort of worked.

i also got a chance to “read” the duty free magazine that was all in japanese. while flipping through i saw this gem:

the best part was the first meal and one of the snacks. we both got the pork cutlet. the food itself wasn’t that great but i was shocked at what was provided.

you got the cutlet with rice and some veggies, with soba noodles, artichoke hearts, grilled chicken, smoked salmon, mushrooms, a dinner roll, bottle of water and whatever drink you want. the later each person got their own individual minipint of hagen daaz vanilla icecream. the snack i refer to is one of my favorite japanese foods, onigiri:

once we got to tokyo/narita airport we had to wait for 4 hours, instead of the original hour layover. it sucked, and i couldn’t even call my family in korea to let them know we were going to be 4 hours late (this basically meant i was going to be in trouble with my family). but at least i got a little bit of sleep at the airport. that’s about it. luckily the flight to korea was pretty short and straightforward. we got here around 2am, and fell asleep almost immediately.
