today i was surfing a site that i normally peruse for local news and saw an ad in the corner of the page. what i saw was DISTURBING. do you remember what you were thinking when you first saw borat wearing a swimsuit?

people don’t like canada, africa, russia or china

so it seems that people don’t have to or don’t like to travel to canada, africa, russia or china. at least
based on what dopplr says. here’s a graphical
representation of where we traveled to:

of course my statement is being very general here.. i’ve been to canada a few times…and based on the
diagram i might have been to the more popular destinations like vancouver (for our honeymoon),
toronto/niagara falls, and montreal. but the deeper parts of canada don’t seem to be as popular.

never been to africa, but i’ve heard lovely things and seen some great pictures. though the current
kenya news concerns me, it’s definitely a place i’d love to visit. as a side note: at a missions
conference one of the speakers encouraged us to take family missions trips to places like rwanda or
kenya instead of vacations. from a very american perspective, this is such a mind boggling and far-
fetched idea. why? i’m not going to answer that for you here… but consider it… and maybe one day
your family and my family will be able to “vacation” together.

i’ve also never been to russia. i don’t think i’m as compelled to go there except for the possible vodka
tastings, but otherwise I can’t really imagine myself visiting there. maybe that’ll change one day

but i’ve been to china a few years ago right before the SARS scare. honestly, once you get past some
of the weird cultural differences (like kids peeing in the street via pants that have a large hole in a
“discreet” area, or people blowing their nose straight on to the street) china is actually a nice country
to visit. there’s lots to see – like gardens, old palaces, etc and plenty of “new” foods to try… but
personally, i can only take so much of the rudeness many people inflict on tourists and the dirtiness
that surrounds you in most places.

since we’re on the topic of travelling… joseph and i are going to korea in april! i can’t wait!!

only in nyc could they pull it off. what is it that you ask? it’s called the idiotarod. if anywhere there is a
mass concentration of idiots, it’s in this great city i live in called new york city. (mind you i’m a
transplant and there are plenty of smart people to counteract the idiots). similar to the iditarod
sled race that takes place in alaska, the idiotarod is a race, but instead of a sled pulled by
dogs, it’s a shopping cart pulled by .. you guessed it… idiots … aka people

weird ideas about money

our minds work in very strange ways. check this example:

Would you rather earn $50,000 a year while other people make $25,000, or would you rather
earn $100,000 a year while other people get $250,000? Assume for the moment that prices of
goods and services will stay the same.
Surprisingly — stunningly, in fact — research shows that the majority of people select the first
option; they would rather make twice as much as others even if that meant earning half as much
as they could otherwise have. How irrational is that?

there’s something really interesting about behavioral economics. why do we think a certain way until
someone points out the “wrongs” of our ways, especially when it comes to money? of course there are
some who are not “average” in that they would’ve chosen the 100k a year. But it seems obvious that
you would want to make 100k rather than 50k since that really should be the only factor.

but in our society where competition seems to be paramount, people just want to beat others even if
it means “less” for them…

why are we wired this way? and how do we change it wholesale?.. something to chew on

resusable wrapping paper

i don’t know about other cultures, but this type of wrapping of gifts is pretty common in korea.
particularly more traditional gifts like old fashioned candies, etc:

sorry for the short haitus… joseph and i have been sick the last few days. so i’ve only just begun to
catch up with the interweb…during my long sleep sessions i missed this!

It’s a machine that eats snow and then creates these blocks of ice via it’s rear end…
hence -> ICE POOPER!
I think NYC should get these and then use the pooped ice bricks to create a massively large igloo in
the middle of central park. it’ll be cool. but i probably wouldn’t go visit it, because nyc snow is
GROSS and DIRTY >_<
